Yesterday, four other students and I went to see the Mayan Ruins that are about a 15 minute walk from the center of town. We decided that we wanted to get there when they opened so that we could be sure to see everything that we wanted.
If you ever get a chance to see Mayan Ruins in one of the Latin American countries, do it! It is so worth it. The other girls and I decided to get a guide to show us around the ruins since there is so much that we don´t know about. Our guide was Antonio and he has been working as a tour guide since the 70´s. He was very knowledgeable and we were very glad that we chose him to be our guide. He told us that he was in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the best tour guide for the ruins, or something along those lines. I am going to have to check it out to see if that´s for real. In total, we spent about 3 hours at the ruins and saw everything there was to see. We were constantly amazed at how intricate the details for the buildings are. It´s amazing what those Mayans were able to do centuries ago.
After the main park of the Ruins we decided to go to a smaller site about 2km from the Ruins. This site is mainly a residential area for the Mayans and all we really saw were thier houses, but since this site is a little less well known we were able to wander around and explore on our own. Many of the houses at this site weren´t completly excavated yet, so we were even able to climb up to take a closer look.
The day at the Ruins was amazing! We did a lot of walking and a lot of sweating under the hot sun. What an amazing experience to see a part of Ancient History.
Next weekend, Antigua, Guatemala!
