Se habla Espanol

My time in Honduras, though brief, was wonderful. I learned a lot of Spanish and met some very cool people that I hope to keep in contact with in the future.

While there are many modern convinces that I am very happy to have again (i.e. running water, hot showers, washing machines), there are many things I miss about the simplicity of life in Honduras. Here is my list of things I miss most about Honduras:

  • Being able to walk everywhere: everything that we needed was less than 20min. away
  • The afternoon rain showers: while occasionally inconvenient, they were refreshing and usually were accompanied by a rainbow
  • Speaking Spanish all day: I AM currently in south Texas, but I really haven't used Spanish since I've been back
  • The people: I loved the people I got to know in Honduras from the other students and teachers at the school, to the family I lived with, the owner of the local restaurant that myself and other students visited on a regular basis, and all the other friendly people I got to know
  • The ethnic food: Baleadas were my favorite, I could do without some of the other food, but the baleadas was great
  • The Mountains: Copan Ruinas is up in the mountains and we had some beautiful views
  • The Hill of Death (La Colina de muerte) : This, of course, is not the real name of one of the hills in Copan, but rather the name Kristin and I gave to the hill that we had to climb up and down multiple times a day. Good exercise though.
  • The random stray dogs that ran around town: Being a third world country you expect there to be many strays running around and we were not disappointed. There were a couple that we came to recognize; Sula and Spritley were our favorites. They were usually by the restaurants where we spent many of our evenings and would occasionally "protect" us on our walk home.
  • The simple life: Being in Honduras I really came to appreciate all I have in the States and have since been forcing myself to distinguish between want and need. "Do I really need this, or do I just want this?" It will constantly be a battle for me, but after you see people in another country doing without and getting along just fine, it forces you to really look at the choices you make.
If you ever have the opportunity to travel to Honduras, I highly recommend it. It is a beautiful country with beautiful people.

I will be posting pictures soon on facebook, so if you are friends with me there be looking for a new album soon.
